the equity & social justice quartet
The quartet was conceived after an elevator ride with Angela Davis, whom I briefly met while attending a workshop for my day job. I had already been thinking about forming an ensemble, and now at the same time, my thoughts were occupied with issues of equity and social justice. As the elevator doors opened, I wanted to say something smart or important, but the best that I came up with was "paternalism is not progressive," which sort of made sense in the context of a speech we had both just endured. I cringed at my failed attempt to connect with Ms. Davis and continued on with my day. As I began considering names for my new ensemble it didn't take long for me to happen upon The Equity and Social Justice Quartet. Our first project was for Homeless Children's Network in San Francisco. The quartet is dedicated to raising awareness, and when possible funds, for non-profit and community organizations dedicated to equity and social justice.
